If you have never experienced hypnosis you may have some questions
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is actually a very natural state of mind. We all spend a vast majority of the day in a trance-like state. Have you ever driven a familiar route and realised that you can’t remember most of it? Have you been so engrossed in a book or a film that time seems to disappear? Then you have been in a state of focused attention, not dissimilar to hypnosis, it also happens when our mind wanders, or we daydream.
How does hypnosis feel?
It’s very similar to drifting off to sleep at night, or the feeling you have just as you wake up but before you open your eyes. People are often surprised at how natural it feels, and that they can hear every word that is said to them. If you wanted to, you could open your eyes at any point and break the state.
What does hypnosis do?
In hypnosis, you are guided into a relaxed state where your subconscious mind becomes much more receptive to positive suggestion. After a session, you may feel uplifted, lighter and very relaxed. Often the change is very subtle, and you may just notice a very positive shift in how you are feeling. The changes you make will be noticed over time.
Will I lose control if I'm hypnotised?
Many people think that they will lose control however, nobody can make you do anything you do not want to do. If you are not comfortable with what is being said, you can simply open your eyes, as your subconscious will reject any suggestion that is inappropriate for you. Stage hypnosis is very different from therapeutic hypnosis, the volunteers in a stage show actually want to cluck like a chicken or dance with a mop!
Can anyone be hypnotised?
Because it is such a natural everyday state, we are all able to go into a hypnotic trance. You will be in a trance when listening to your friend tell you a story when you are daydreaming or watching a film. People just experience it differently, some feel like they have been asleep, others are completely aware of what is going on but feel incredibly relaxed, almost like a weightlessness or that their body feels heavy.
What is the difference between other therapies and Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?
Many other therapies concentrate on what your problems are, why they occurred and how they make you feel. With Solution Focused Therapy we acknowledge any painful or unwanted memories or behaviour and then focus on where you are now, what you want to achieve or how you would like to be and work on the necessary changes you can make to reach this goal. Compared to other talk therapies, changes can be made in a relatively short period of time.
How many sessions will I need?
This all depends on the individual and the presenting issue, some people see a positive change in 3 – 5 sessions, others may take 8 or more sessions.
Stop Smoking takes 3 sessions.
Fears or Phobias take 3 sessions.
